“What a ride. HEAD is that rare kind of thriller that pulls you in with action but keeps you hooked with layers—psychological, emotional, even existential. Ben Lorloch is a brilliant lead: sharp, damaged, unpredictable. The line between game and reality blurs so cleverly, I found myself double-guessing everything alongside him.
It’s fast-paced, yes, but not mindless. The worldbuilding is smart, the dialogue tight, and the deeper questions around identity, memory, and self-delusion really land. Think Black Mirror meets House of Leaves, but tighter. Easily one of the most original things I’ve read this year.

HEAD may be compared by subject matter to American Gods by Neil Gaiman. By style and distinctive voice, to The Shack by William P. Young. By tone and agency to House Rules and My Sister’s Keeper by Jodie Picoult, and by tone to The President Is Missing by James Patterson.
And by subject, style, agency, tone and mood to Mr. Robot by Isaac Asimov.
It is also comparable to House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski and the TV series Black Mirror.

HEAD is a gripping fusion of tech-driven suspense and psychological intrigue, delivered through a raw, fast-moving story that keeps the tension high. At its core is Ben Lorloch—a young game designer thrust into a maze of digital deception, assassins, and buried secrets after the murder of his father.
What makes this novel stand out isn’t just the smart interplay between virtual reality and real-life danger—it’s the emotional intensity driving the action. Lorloch is no polished hero; he’s complex, distant at times, yet undeniably compelling. The writing style is sharp and staccato, matching the breakneck pace of the plot. It might feel abrupt at first, but once it clicks, it pulls you in hard.
If you're into thrillers that mix tech, mystery, and existential depth, HEAD is worth the ride. Think Black Mirror meets a gritty, futuristic murder mystery—twisted, immersive, and unexpectedly thoughtful. -
5.0 out of 5 stars This is a good one!!!

HEAD is a mesmerizing collision of speculative fiction, psychological thriller, and digital noir. From the very first page, I was pulled into its fractured virtual world—where memory deceives, identity shatters, and nothing is quite as it seems. The writing is sharp yet lyrical, reminiscent of Neil Gaiman’s mythic layering in American Gods while carrying the haunting intimacy of William P. Young’s The Shack. Like Jodi Picoult’s House Rules, it navigates moral ambiguity with heart and tension, yet its pacing and suspense keep you flipping pages like a James Patterson thriller.tem description

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Beyond the Video Game
Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2025
This novel brings my imagined fears to life - the horrifying idea that the plot of a scary video game might spill over into the real world. What if the characters start killing for real? What if they have no mercy, no empathy, and no fear of getting caught? Or perhaps the player was simply inspired by the violent video game, pushing him toward real-life actions, blending traumatic events with actual murders. The author doesn’t distract us with detailed, emotional descriptions; instead, he maintains a crisp rhythm and pacing. What matters are the events themselves, their logic, and sequence. You keep reading because you want to solve the puzzle, not because you're emotionally invested in the characters. It’s a contemporary, dynamic thriller that captures current technological trends.

I enjoyed this small collection of short poems. The title is certainly informative, as many of the one-pagers seemed as though they could be part of some larger poem, yet they serve as stand-alones. The author employs themes related to nature and animals, combining references to the intersection of painting and poetry, both of which are visual arts. A daydreaming quality infuses this chapbook. The imagery is often intense. Would like to see some of the paintings.

What made me a mystery thriller writer?
I am attracted to people who ‘get away with it.’ I have always been curious about why they did ‘it’ and how novel their approach to clinching ‘it’ is, mostly unseen. It all started when I was about seven years old and I saw ? do ? And no one knew but me…and ? got away with it. And I realised I could write from that point of view, as a complicit, unseen narrator.
I am also a poet.
Abstract Conceptual Realism defines my prose and poetry.
The P. in P. Portraits is for Poppet, my nickname.
